Work on Chance's Transom Framework and rebuilding her Navigation lights

 These updates are of the restoration of Chance our James Silver Western Isles Motorsailer, now that we have Chance at Titchmarsh Marina in Walton on the Naze Essex.

The restoration can and will be easier to do has Chance is now very close to my own workshop and small yard. This update is continuing on with the framework pattern making and starting on work on the original Davey & Co Ltd Navigation lights off Chance. They have been loving restored to their original condition and have had all the missing or otherwise damaged parts replaced and in some cases have had new parts custom made to the original patterned parts from the original parts of the inner working parts. These lights will be rewired and new LED bulbs fitted to increase the strength of the lights. We are looking for a steaming light and stern light of the same design so that Chance will have a complete set of original design navigation lights once Chance is back in the water and the masts are re-rigged. We know that this is to come in the future however we still need to find the other lights to complete the set of navigation lights for Chance. So we are still continuing to look for other parts for Chance as time goes on and are collecting parts as we go along going to boat jumbles and where there are other James A Silver's being broken up or parts being replaced for new parts. Chance like a lot of James Silver / John Bain designed boats at the time Chance was build, they were twin screw single rudder designed.  The stern gear glands were of white metal and were very close fitting glands The original propellers that were fitted when Chance was originally launched in 1948 The original manufacturer of the propeller can be seen as Thornycroft   On this photo is can be seen that the diameter is 17 1/2 " x 12 1/2" These propeller shafts will have to be removed as there is work to be done on the stern tubes and the bearing changed to modern stern gear when Chance is re-engineered

Engine filters from 70 years ago, all the parts can be washed and refitted non disposable parts, so no land fill

The good part about the old fuel filter system on Chance is that it is a non disposable system, so it just needs cleaning at regular intervals to keep it working  Although there are a number of parts to the filter system it is straightforward and easy to dismantle and rebuild when it needs cleaning to maintain the engines   Just need a couple of parts replacing as they are worn out, apart from that the system is ready to be reused again for another 70 years or more

A big shout out for a cover to put over Chance so we can get on with the restoration of Chance.

 At the moment we are in this position with Chance, We have a large poly sheet over Chance which keeps getting blown off as we can not fix it down very well and is a thankless task having to keep pulling over the boat until the next major gale of strong wind decides to remove the cover again.  That's the position at the moment, what we are looking for is a shed/workshop like the one over Helen Wycherley Heritage Restoration project in Whitby North Yorkshire. This type of shed/ workshop would do our restoration project a world of good and make possible for us to get on with our restoration of Chance.    So if anyone out there can put us in contact with anyone who wishes to move on their poly tunnel shed/ workshop, please get in contact with us through our social media channels.
