Day 2 of working back on Chance after the winter break


Day 2 of finally working on Chance, as seen Simon start to remove a couple of rotten planks on the starboard bow. These had come to light when removing the paint on the inside of the hull in the forecabin. Simon also found that three of the ribs in the forecabin are also rotten and will have to be removed and renewed before any planks can go back in place. In order to do these ribs Simon is going to have to remove the foredeck covering board on the starboard bow section of Chance's foredeck. While Simon was looking at the the ribs he found that the beam shelf is rotten in that part of the boat and so the covering board is going to have to be removed as far back as the cockpit . So that will be Simon's next job, to remove the covering board and expose the beam shelf and also the tops of the ribs so that the new ribs can be put in from the top. So the fun is just starting and Simon is going to have his hands full for a few weeks to come.

Chance like a lot of James Silver / John Bain designed boats at the time Chance was build, they were twin screw single rudder designed.  The stern gear glands were of white metal and were very close fitting glands The original propellers that were fitted when Chance was originally launched in 1948 The original manufacturer of the propeller can be seen as Thornycroft   On this photo is can be seen that the diameter is 17 1/2 " x 12 1/2" These propeller shafts will have to be removed as there is work to be done on the stern tubes and the bearing changed to modern stern gear when Chance is re-engineered

Engine filters from 70 years ago, all the parts can be washed and refitted non disposable parts, so no land fill

The good part about the old fuel filter system on Chance is that it is a non disposable system, so it just needs cleaning at regular intervals to keep it working  Although there are a number of parts to the filter system it is straightforward and easy to dismantle and rebuild when it needs cleaning to maintain the engines   Just need a couple of parts replacing as they are worn out, apart from that the system is ready to be reused again for another 70 years or more

A big shout out for a cover to put over Chance so we can get on with the restoration of Chance.

 At the moment we are in this position with Chance, We have a large poly sheet over Chance which keeps getting blown off as we can not fix it down very well and is a thankless task having to keep pulling over the boat until the next major gale of strong wind decides to remove the cover again.  That's the position at the moment, what we are looking for is a shed/workshop like the one over Helen Wycherley Heritage Restoration project in Whitby North Yorkshire. This type of shed/ workshop would do our restoration project a world of good and make possible for us to get on with our restoration of Chance.    So if anyone out there can put us in contact with anyone who wishes to move on their poly tunnel shed/ workshop, please get in contact with us through our social media channels.
