As many of our followers know, Simon, his wife Tricia and their son Michael with the aid of Simon's brother John, have over the past 4 years has done a vast amount of work on getting Chance stripped down to a bare hull apart from Chance's main bulkheads and removing Chance's transom and much of the starboard side deck from the transom to the wheelhouse. To the point where Chance can start to be re-build.

Much of the early work has been back breaking and difficult at times has Chance was in Woodplumpton near Preston in Lancashire and we live in North Essex near Colchester. Also the fact that when we became Chance's latest owners and guardians it was in the height of the Covid Pandemic so we could not work on Chance at first until we were able to move freely and purchased a large caravan to use as a base of operations while we worked on Chance at very chance we had to get to Chance while Chance was in Woodplumpton.

This period of working on Chance lasted for about 18 months while we saved enough funds to transport Chance down to Walton on the Naze in Essex which is going to be Chance's home while we do her restoration and her re-launch.

Once we got Chance home to Essex we started upon her restoration, however, this got sidelined by a number of deaths in the family and also a couple of close friends who were supporters of our restoration of Chance.

So the restoration we had planned to take about 4 to 5 years as now become a restoration which is more likely to take 6 to 7 years to complete.

So we are now looking for a settled period of time in which to make a start on the project start in the New Year.

To this end we are re-naming the project Chance Reborn 2025 as it is going to be a re-born of our project and also ourselves as we move forward with this project.   

From the 1st of January we are starting a new YouTube Channel called Chance Reborn 2025. Giving Chance a Second Chance

This channel is going to show the rebuilding of Chance after 4 years of dismantling her. This will show how we will go above rebuilding this classic James A Silver Motor Sailer back to a sea going vessel once more.

A big shout out for a cover to put over Chance so we can get on with the restoration of Chance.

 At the moment we are in this position with Chance, We have a large poly sheet over Chance which keeps getting blown off as we can not fix it down very well and is a thankless task having to keep pulling over the boat until the next major gale of strong wind decides to remove the cover again.  That's the position at the moment, what we are looking for is a shed/workshop like the one over Helen Wycherley Heritage Restoration project in Whitby North Yorkshire. Chance Autumn update

As many of you will have seen from the lack of updates there as been little work done on Chance over the summer. This as been due a lack of time and more over a lack of funds to do major task done on Chance. especially the removal of the middle and aft section of the starboard beam shelf and reconstructing the transom and its framework which holds it in position.   However, all is not doom and gloom, has I have been able to take on an apprentice to help me during the working week on my clients boats and leave myself and wife time to get on with working on Chances repairs.  So hopefully over the coming week's we should be able to make a start on getting the beam shelf removed and replaced with a new correctly fitted beam shelf which will bring the hull back into position  along with the ribs and frames which have to be replaced at the same time to get the hull back into its correct position once more.  There is going to be a lot of shoring up of the starboard sid...

Next Job at the stern of Chance is going to be to remove the Rudder on Chance

 Now having removed a number of planks on either side of the hog as found that the inner hog is in need of replacing. This means that we will have to remove the rudder tube. This means having to remove all the frame work from the transom to expose the rudder tube. The rudder tube in this photo is sitting on two shaped wedges on top of the hog.  Also all this aft deck planking is going to have to be removed as well. no easy job as it was laid down with galvanized screws which have been in place for almost 80 years and will very likely not come out without a lot of damage to the teak decking, so it is likely we will cut off the screws between the deck and the deck beams. This is not a problem as the deck beams have to be replaced anyway because at one end they are not fixed and at sometime in the past were cut short. So now the fun will start dismantling the aft end of the boat more to get the hog repaired and the whole of this area rebuild as strong as when it was first build....
