Work that can be done while the days are short and the weather is too cold to work outside



Some of the work that can and will be done over the winter will be to tackle the shelves full of parts that came out of Chance before she was transported down from Woodplumpton down to Walton on the Naze for her next stage of her restoration.

There are a number of drawers that came out of different parts of Chances' interior, some of the drawers are in poorer condition than others. Some will just need a couple of parts re-making while others will completely apart from the drawer fronts which is the only part that can be re-used. 

Other parts such as steps just need stripping of old varnish and sanding down and new varnish applying. One job that is going to be interesting is going to be making a new saloon table from scratch. I will have to source a set of the plans and make a replacement table,    



After a lot of taking with people in the know about the diesel cooker and whether it was worth replacing the worn out parts that had given up the ghost and after a long decision making process. It was decided to order the new parts from Dickinson in Canada and get the cooker sorted and up and working again. Then refit the cooker in the galley area after the galley area is re-designed to make it fit and be user friendly. Then put the cupboard back in the saloon where it was originally positioned and make the saloon look like it was when Chance was originally built


Another job is to see if it is possible to reuse this original fuel system and if so it will save a lot of money not having to buy a new filtration system for the replacement engines. As one engineer friend once said to me you can never have too many fuel filters in a boat engine system. 

So as the long night are here we will be busy in the workshop get boat wood work sorted and repaired ready to put back in the boat at a later date when the hull and deck repairers are done.

A big shout out for a cover to put over Chance so we can get on with the restoration of Chance.

 At the moment we are in this position with Chance, We have a large poly sheet over Chance which keeps getting blown off as we can not fix it down very well and is a thankless task having to keep pulling over the boat until the next major gale of strong wind decides to remove the cover again.  That's the position at the moment, what we are looking for is a shed/workshop like the one over Helen Wycherley Heritage Restoration project in Whitby North Yorkshire. Chance Autumn update

As many of you will have seen from the lack of updates there as been little work done on Chance over the summer. This as been due a lack of time and more over a lack of funds to do major task done on Chance. especially the removal of the middle and aft section of the starboard beam shelf and reconstructing the transom and its framework which holds it in position.   However, all is not doom and gloom, has I have been able to take on an apprentice to help me during the working week on my clients boats and leave myself and wife time to get on with working on Chances repairs.  So hopefully over the coming week's we should be able to make a start on getting the beam shelf removed and replaced with a new correctly fitted beam shelf which will bring the hull back into position  along with the ribs and frames which have to be replaced at the same time to get the hull back into its correct position once more.  There is going to be a lot of shoring up of the starboard sid...

Next Job at the stern of Chance is going to be to remove the Rudder on Chance

 Now having removed a number of planks on either side of the hog as found that the inner hog is in need of replacing. This means that we will have to remove the rudder tube. This means having to remove all the frame work from the transom to expose the rudder tube. The rudder tube in this photo is sitting on two shaped wedges on top of the hog.  Also all this aft deck planking is going to have to be removed as well. no easy job as it was laid down with galvanized screws which have been in place for almost 80 years and will very likely not come out without a lot of damage to the teak decking, so it is likely we will cut off the screws between the deck and the deck beams. This is not a problem as the deck beams have to be replaced anyway because at one end they are not fixed and at sometime in the past were cut short. So now the fun will start dismantling the aft end of the boat more to get the hog repaired and the whole of this area rebuild as strong as when it was first build....
