Working on the foredeck and removal of the deck edge covering boards


These updates are of the restoration of Chance our James Silver Western Isles Motorsailer, now that we have Chance at Titchmarsh Marina in Walton on the Naze Essex. The restoration can and will be easier to do has Chance is now very close to my own workshop and small yard. Working on removing the deck edge covering board to expose the port side beam shelf so it can be replaced and the fore deck beams which need removing an replacing as well

The good part about the old fuel filter system on Chance is that it is a non disposable system, so it just needs cleaning at regular intervals to keep it working  Although there are a number of parts to the filter system it is straightforward and easy to dismantle and rebuild when it needs cleaning to maintain the engines   Just need a couple of parts replacing as they are worn out, apart from that the system is ready to be reused again for another 70 years or more

The work this week on the Dickinson Diesel Stove

The restoration of the cooker is well underway, I am now in the process of ordering some new parts for the cooker. After the years of neglect it is not surprising that there are a few parts that have since better days and need replacing. The major items that need replacing are the super heater element in the burner, The super heater element which as seen better days   The draft fan and its controller and a piece of firebrick that needs renewing which is broken. Apart from these items the cooker has stood up well over the years.  The other parts such as the burner bowl, which needed its vent holes cleaning and the soot removing from the bowl itself,  The before photo with the bottom of the bowl with dirt and water and other rubbish that has collected in there over the years  The burner bowl well on the way to being cleaned just a bit more elbow grease and wire wool The fuel valve which needed cleaning out of dirt and water and the unit needed stripping down to cl...

A year on since we started our restoration on Chance and now getting ready for the next stage, her moving home to Essex

  This is Chance a year ago before I made a start on her full restoration The forecabin during the early stages of the restoration  Now with all the furniture removed and ready to get on with thew restoration of the cabin  Two early photos of the starboard hand side of the main cabin before this was all removed to get to the hull planking and the ribs so that they can be repaired. The whole of the main cabin removed and what was able to be removed in one piece is now in storage and other parts that were in not such good condition are being rebuild in the same method as when they were originally constructed in 1948 The galley area stripped down to the bare hull so that necessary repairs can be made to the bulkheads and planking and ribs before the galley is refitted back in place.
