Removing the starboard side fore deck covering boards and inspecting how much work is going to be needed to be done on this side

The starboard side deck edge covering boards were a lot easier to remove as I knew the way they put down from removing the port side deck edge covering boards last week . Therefore, know what to expect on this side.


At least side had all the same type of wood screw holding them down and so it was easier to know how to remove the section of board. 


Much of the spacing blocks are in god condition apart from a couple which had been damaged by rain water and being enclosed did not help. these have been removed and the area as been left to get some fresh air.


The one problem on this side like the port side is that the ends of the deck beams are in poor condition and will have to have the ends remade and refitted to the beam shelf after the beam shelf is inspected and if it need replacing then this will be done.


Some of the deck beams ends are worse than other either way they will all need sorting out and re-making in some way or other before the deck is relaid again. The next deck will be have a thin marine plywood sub deck and the original as far as possible relaid on top of the new sub-deck.

Chance like a lot of James Silver / John Bain designed boats at the time Chance was build, they were twin screw single rudder designed.  The stern gear glands were of white metal and were very close fitting glands The original propellers that were fitted when Chance was originally launched in 1948 The original manufacturer of the propeller can be seen as Thornycroft   On this photo is can be seen that the diameter is 17 1/2 " x 12 1/2" These propeller shafts will have to be removed as there is work to be done on the stern tubes and the bearing changed to modern stern gear when Chance is re-engineered

Engine filters from 70 years ago, all the parts can be washed and refitted non disposable parts, so no land fill

The good part about the old fuel filter system on Chance is that it is a non disposable system, so it just needs cleaning at regular intervals to keep it working  Although there are a number of parts to the filter system it is straightforward and easy to dismantle and rebuild when it needs cleaning to maintain the engines   Just need a couple of parts replacing as they are worn out, apart from that the system is ready to be reused again for another 70 years or more

A year to remember and also forget.

 This past year as been one of many turns and changes along the way. We had plans to get the restoration of Chance underway in a major way. however this was not to be the case. As the following paragraph will show you. Having moved Chance from Woodplumpton in the previous November to Walton on the Naze in Essex, we set about making plans to start doing the restoration in the spring of this year.  However, this was derailed by the passing of my wife's mother after a long illness, this event happened and so the project was put on hold for most of the year apart from doing the odd bit here and there either on Chance or in the workshop doing small jobs while we rebuild our lives once more,  So has the months when on during 2023 without the heart to move the project along the project ground to a slow halt and in the end it stop with a cover being put over the boat and all work stopped on the boat itself.  So we both when about our daily working lives while we came to term...
