At Galley there is a galley work top and I am starting to fill up the holes in the deck and putting blanks over the missing window glass.

At last I have a galley work top to put the kettle on and make a brew while working on Chance. I just need to get the Microwave from my workshop and I will be able to heat up food while working on the boat without having to leave Chance. I do have a camping fridge onboard so I can keep food onboard over night when needed.  


I do have my mug from my son onboard a present from a couple of years ago on father's day


The window is blanked off as is the chimney hole which is one of the holes which as to be filled in as the cooker is going back in its original position in the galley space. I just have to build a new framework to sit it on after the other work in that area of the boat is done. 


The port side window as been blanked off as well and so as the vent for the diesel heater which was fitted to the main bulkhead at the front of the main cabin.


The diesel heater was originally fitted on this bulkhead below the restoration project sheets on the bulkhead and will be going back on this bulkhead later in the restoration


The skylight as to have two blanks put over it as well as the skylight in the galley space, then I will put a waterproof cover over the skylights to keep the rain out of the part of the boat.


The next job will be to get some plywood to blank off the starboard side deck and the two hatches on the foredeck and aft deck. Once this id done then the boat will be a lot more watertight  and I can get on with work on the inside as well as the outside.

Chance like a lot of James Silver / John Bain designed boats at the time Chance was build, they were twin screw single rudder designed.  The stern gear glands were of white metal and were very close fitting glands The original propellers that were fitted when Chance was originally launched in 1948 The original manufacturer of the propeller can be seen as Thornycroft   On this photo is can be seen that the diameter is 17 1/2 " x 12 1/2" These propeller shafts will have to be removed as there is work to be done on the stern tubes and the bearing changed to modern stern gear when Chance is re-engineered

Engine filters from 70 years ago, all the parts can be washed and refitted non disposable parts, so no land fill

The good part about the old fuel filter system on Chance is that it is a non disposable system, so it just needs cleaning at regular intervals to keep it working  Although there are a number of parts to the filter system it is straightforward and easy to dismantle and rebuild when it needs cleaning to maintain the engines   Just need a couple of parts replacing as they are worn out, apart from that the system is ready to be reused again for another 70 years or more

Show less Over the past three or so years, We as a family have tried to document the restoration of Chance. The restoration project as taken a long time as it as been done during the Covid 19 pandemic and the fact Chance was in a different part of the country to where we live, in Woodplumpton in Lancashire and we live in North East Essex, so the trips to Chance for the first two years of her restoration have been a long distance affair to say the least. However, we were up to it and we did a lot of work removing much of the old furniture and the other items from inside Chance which were beyond saving, such as rusted fuel and water tanks, worn out stern gear, Seized engines which could not be restored without a lot of money being spend on them.
